Formula: OD = 2 × √( (L × t) / π + (ID / 2)² ) | L = rolled length, t = thickness, ID = center hole diameter. A mil is one thousandth of an inch; a micron is one thousandth of a millimetre.
How to calculate the outside diameter of a roll
The outside diameter of a roll is driven by three variables: how much material is wound on, how thick that material is, and how large the core is. Because the wound material forms an annulus, its cross-sectional area equals the rolled length multiplied by the thickness. Adding the area of the core and solving for diameter gives the standard roll OD formula used above.
- Length of material — the total rolled length, in yards, feet, inches, metres, centimetres, or millimetres.
- Material thickness — single-layer caliper, in mil, micron, millimetres, or inches. A mil is one thousandth of an inch; a micron is one thousandth of a millimetre.
- Center hole diameter — the inside diameter (ID) of the core the material is wound on.
Where engineers use a roll OD calculator
Roll diameter drives packaging, storage, shipping cube, and machine clearance. Harness manufacturers use it to confirm that a tape or tubing roll will fit a dispenser or applicator; procurement teams use it to compare put-ups from different suppliers; warehouse planners use it to check rack and pallet fit before an order lands. It is equally useful for calculating maximum wind length onto a fixed-diameter core.
Accuracy and assumptions
The calculation assumes a tightly and evenly wound roll of uniform thickness with no air entrapment between layers. Compressible materials such as foam-backed harness tape, soft films, and elastomeric mastics will measure slightly under or over the calculated figure depending on wind tension. For critical clearances, treat the result as a close engineering estimate and verify against a physical sample.
