Selecting the Right Tape
Why Choose Standard Tape?
Standard harness tape is often the best choice for harnesses with smaller bundle diameters or shorter branch lengths. It provides operators with greater application accuracy and consistent wrap quality while maintaining excellent harness flexibility. Standard tape also delivers reliable breakout coverage and abrasion protection, making it well suited for applications where precision and repeatability are critical.
When RT Tape May Not Be the Best Choice
Coroplast RT tape is typically supplied in a 35 mm width, which can make it more challenging to securely wrap wire bundles smaller than approximately 14 mm in diameter. These smaller bundles are generally more flexible by nature because they contain fewer conductors and less insulation, resulting in less restriction during bending. Likewise, shorter harness segments often do not require the additional flexibility benefits that RT tape provides.
Why Choose RT Tape?
Coroplast RT tape is designed to maximize harness flexibility by minimizing adhesive contact with the wire bundle while still providing equivalent abrasion protection. Its 35 mm width also increases application efficiency by allowing operators to wrap long harness branches and straight segments more quickly than standard tape.
Standard Tape Considerations
Coroplast standard tape provides excellent protection, secure bundle retention, and consistent application performance across a wide range of harness designs. Because the adhesive is applied directly to the wire bundle, harness flexibility may be slightly reduced compared to Coroplast RT tape. However, for many applications—particularly smaller diameter bundles and shorter segments—standard tape remains the preferred solution.
